Checking for Reasonableness
Make Sure Your Answers Make Sense
After solving a problem, always ask: does this answer seem right? Estimating before and after solving helps catch silly mistakes.
How to Check
- Round numbers to make a quick estimate.
- Compare your answer to your estimate.
- If your answer is way off, try the problem again!
Examples
Estimate 199 + 202 as about 400, so the exact answer should be close.
Check if your answer for a measurement is bigger or smaller than the objects involved.
