Tutoring review by Melinda in Sonoma, CA
The student and I went over content on series and summations in preparation for her next exam. We covered chapters 12-1 and 12-3 in the textbook. I did example problems for each section and walked her through them. Then I allowed her to try the problems on her own.

We covered indefinite and definite integration of polynomials, the useful lifetime formula (setting the profit function equal to zero to determine how long a machine or business would be profitable for and integrating over that time to determine total profit), the left rectangle and right rectangle error bounds, how to construct a graph of a function from a few points, the regions of positive and negative slope, and the regions of positive and negative concavity.

Tutoring review by Christopher in Sonoma, CA
Yesterday, the student and I worked on solving basic algebraic equations. She was a little hesitant at first with some of the problems, but I described to her the analogy of "unlocking" the variable of interest and I think that really resonated with her. Basically, I explained to her how when we are isolating a variable, really all we are doing is trying to "unlock" this variable and there are various layers that need to be unlocked before we can get the variable by itself. In order to unlock those layers we have tools... adding/ subtracting/ multiplying/ dividing/ squaring/ square-rooting. We also talked about how there can be multiple ways to get to the right answer so she should not be worried if her method doesn't work initially. At first, I could tell she wasn't terrible comfortable with the material, but by the end I think she was a lot more confident. This was a very good session.

We completed the student's reading log for the week. We also spent time studying for his exams on the novel, The Cay, spelling, vocabulary, and parts of speech. We also took some time to practice World Geography (longitude and latitude).

Tutoring review by Thomas in Sonoma, CA
The student and I reviewed 50 geometry questions, as this is another key element in his taking these state tests. He got 39 out of 50 correct, and again, we reviewed these questions and answers afterward. He did well, and seemed to understand most of the problems. We need to do some more graphs and proofs and theorems in one of our next math session.
