Tutoring review by Alexa in Lake Zurich, IL
We first reviewed the student's science homework, which covered protein synthesis and genetic mutation. I discussed with her the importance of the key terms, and how she can use the key terms when she goes back to the textbook to study for her exams. For both math and science, she may need to get a little more comfortable with reading a question, figuring out what exactly the question is asking and then answering it. For science, she does know that she can consult her textbook to assist her with her homework. Referring to the textbook is a newer skill for her, but she seems to be doing just fine. For math, we worked on using the equation of a line. She has some difficulty understanding how the concepts of proportions and ratios that she was just learning translates to working with the equation of a line. She often has no problems graphing the information, but the equation (y=mx) causes her some trouble. Nonetheless, she finished her homework and worked through the problems that were more difficult for her. Again, there is some difficulty understanding exactly what the question is asking and then deciding exactly how she should answer it. We will continue to practice all of these concepts, especially solving for different variables using a graph and the equation of a line. In the past, increased repetition of a certain type of difficult problem has helped her to better understand and independently solve them.

The student and I went over a practice no-calculator exam portion provided by her teacher. She had already done a few problems and felt pretty good about some of the material, but there were some topics she had not covered or reviewed in a while and needed some refreshing on. We will meet again next Thursday.

For this tutoring session, I started the lesson by quizzing the kids on facts about France that we had previously read. Student 1 answered the questions well, while the other two had difficulty remembering the answers. I asked them both to write bullet points of the facts for next lesson. We then worked on their reading skills and read pages 50-54 in their Bon Voyage book. We are on chapter two and the theme is the classroom. After learning how to say different subjects in French, I asked that they create a list of the subjects they're taking in school for next lesson.

The student and I worked on multiplication and measurement today. We started by doing two digit multiplication by breaking the number down into parts and adding the tens and ones places together. He picked up this method easily and did not have trouble completing the problems I assigned him. He also told me he was working on measurement conversion in school, so we spent the last half of the session converting measurements.

Today we studied physics. We went over the basics of forces, Newton's laws, and basic kinematics in preparation for this week's test. The student is well prepared and informed about the scope of the test and finds it easy to work for.
