Tutoring review by Robin in La Grange, IL
History: Today, we reviewed chapter four, and I administered 2 ungraded quizzes. The quizzes are being used as study guides. We worked together on the map and reviewed some of the "important names" flashcards. English: In English, we looked over the tri-dec the student was assigned from last week's session. We discussed the concept and purpose of a dialectical journal and set one up for reading Life of Pi. We also began to discuss the idea of a writer's tool box.

We went through some logic problems and practiced some of the problems in his SSAT book. We practiced with negative numbers, since the student still gets nervous about working with them. He was energetic and asked lots of questions.

Tutoring review by Alexandra in La Grange, IL
The student and I started our session by reviewing the overall format of the test and her strategy for each section. She demonstrated she knows the strategy for all 4 sections. We then completed a fully timed reading section. She was able to complete the entire section with only 2 questions omitted due to time. She was able to get a raw score of 25 which translates to a score of 625 or about 63 percentile. The 50th percentile for a 5th grader is 585 so she is outperforming her peers in reading. We also completed a math section which we split into two parts. She answered several questions which were beyond her understanding and I encouraged her to omit some of these more challenging questions since she only omitted three other questions in the section. She was able to score a 590 which is 36th percentile. Of note, the 50th percentile for a 5th grader is 587 so she is performing at grade level. We will tackle the verbal section at our next session. It is noticeable that the student is much more comfortable with the exam and is moving through problems with more confidence and in a more timely manner. Her score on her upcoming exam should be a significant improvement over her past score.

Tutoring review by Nicholas in La Grange, IL
We discussed the fundamental theorem of calculus and average value of functions. The student had trouble applying the fundamental theorem of calculus in certain situations. Granted, the type of questions are designed to be tricky, but they are very common and so we have to hammer them out. He is very good at average value, and other mechanical aspects of the course. We talked about a couple of ways to think about different questions, that will hopefully help in the future.
