The student and I met again and he had studied a lot on his own again. He figured out the scale problems on his own and prepared a list of questions and problems to go over. We went through how to solve equations with one variable, volume/surface area of common shapes, and how to do surface area given a net of the object (like the wrapper). Since he did well on his own and completed the workbook from cover to cover, we ended early.

We covered 3-4, 3-5, 3-6, and the chapter 3 overall material. Topics included: graphing polynomials, finding asymptotes, finding rational zeroes (esp. Rational Zeroes Theorem), and changing from expanded form to factored form (and vice versa). Again, showing the student how to use her graphing calculator to visualize polynomials made all the difference. Today more than other days, we referred to her study book for the crucial rules and definitions of vertical/horizontal/oblique asymptotes. Materials matter!

We discussed the student's goals and needs for the coming weeks. We reviewed her past music theory books. I ran a few diagnostic tests. Finally we started to work on aural skills, her area of greatest concern. I gave her a list of steps to begin to identify chord qualities. These steps aren't something that most theory profs get in to, so I'm excited to see how they work for the student.

We focused on calculus and went over definition of the derivative. We covered how to find the slope of the tangent line at a point and it's definition. We also went over how to solve for unknown coefficients when given details such as slope of tangent line at a point and arbitrary points on a curve. In physics we briefly touched on tension and how mass affects tension force on a pulley.
