Today, the student and I focused on reviewing topics for his upcoming final exams. Mainly, we covered multiple step word problems, dividing fractions/mixed numbers and descriptive statistics. Tutoring review by Annika in Aurora, IL
The student and I started off with a freewrite, then we continued a topic from the previous week, talking about maps and the elements of a map. We practiced making pretend maps and I had her explain what the map helps us find, what information it gives, etc. We switched gears and did a drawing activity that uses the multiplication table to help you draw a pattern. Later, we went back to mapmaking so that she could work on her US map for social studies. We used the concepts we had spoken about to determine what her map should include and she was able to get started on that during the session. She will be able to continue that this week for class. She was able recall concepts we had discussed last session and apply them this time, which showed she is engaged and retaining the information. I'd like to continue to work on problem solving and critical thinking skills, so that when she is faced with a large assignment, like drawing a map of the US, she can break it down into smaller parts and it will be easier to do. This was a great session!

Tutoring review by Jennifer in Aurora, IL
The student worked on division with remainders. She is doing well with this concept and only making few errors. We also discussed adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions. She then worked on her two multiplication facts. I left her with extra practice problems. She is to practice for five to ten minutes a night on these facts.

Tutoring review by Ingrid in Aurora, IL
Today we discussed and planned the approach to working with the boys. I had each of them take a practice placement exam sample math test. One covered the quantitative skills and the other focused more on mathematical concepts. They all did well on the practice. I reviewed all the questions and helped them with their questions and concerns. I also showed them the website and had them begin taking the ISEE middle grade pre-test in math. Again this was more of a pre-test to evaluate their skills. I have asked the 3 boys to complete the practice test this week so I can assess their areas of strength and weakness. I also recommended that they use the math website to help with math questions or areas where they need additional help. All three boys were cooperative and did a great job this session.
