Tutoring review by Avni in Yukon, OK
Today the student practiced converting decimals to fractions and vice versa. I think she still forgets sometimes to do the same thing to the numerator that she's doing to the denominator, but that will definitely come with practice. We are all caught up, so as we discussed we'll only be meeting once a week now! She did a great job being a good sport about the tutoring. She was cooperative and attentive which I definitely appreciate! To finish, we played some math games on the computer involving fractions, factoring, and prime numbers.

Tutoring review by Travis in Yukon, OK
We switched things up today to make the student feel a little bit more confident in the work he was completing. Since he has had previous success with working with multiplication and division visual representation, we began there. I gave him 3 multiplication problems and 3 division problems. He was able to draw the array and come up with the correct answer for the multiplication problem as was as group numbers when working the division problems. Two of the division problems even had a remainder as part of the answer. We then moved onto manipulating hundreds, tens, and ones manipulatives in order to solve addition and subtraction problems through the hundreds with regrouping and borrowing. Once we reviewed, he seemed to do better on the last couple problems after we refreshed the process of manipulating the tools. The last thing we worked on was counting money. He was able to identify each coin and state its value. We then used a number line to determine how much money he had up to 1 dollar. We talked about counting the coins that were worth more first and then counting coins that were less. We then focused on counting by 10's and 5's instead of counting individual ticks on the number line. One of the last examples we worked, I had him touch each coin and count on numerous times in order to build fluency. I then took the number line away and he was able to count the money very fluently. He seemed excited about his accomplishment and I made sure he understood that the more he worked with this the better he would become.

The student had a good session today. She has a test coming up in Spanish, so we spent the session practicing vocabulary. We went through all the words, first with me saying the word in Spanish, and her in English, then vice versa. We then did matching the Spanish and English words. After that, I wrote paragraphs in Spanish with vocab words missing. She had to read the paragraphs and fill in the appropriate vocabulary words. She is doing very well with her Spanish, and I have seen a lot of improvement in her abilities! I think she will be well-prepared for her test!

The student is currently working on reaction kinetics and rate expressions. We discussed the concepts and made sure she understood what each variable meant before we started working with the actual equations. We worked through the problems she had, then we looked at a few other examples that might come up. We discussed the general structure of her class and how her instructor runs things. We discussed the types of exams she gives and the general schedule. Overall, it seems like the concepts aren't that hard for her.
