Geology has been the basis of my entire career. At Grammar School in England, I took Geology as a subject in order to graduate. I obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Geology at the University of London. I did research at Cambridge University. Coming to America afterwards, I obtained an MS in Geophysics at Southern Methodist University, and then a Ph.D. in Geophysics after submitting a thesis to the University of London. At SMU I lectured in Freshman Geology and tutored a variety of students in the subject. It was a rewarding task and I was eager to renew this experience through Varsity Tutors. There is immense satisfaction in passing on to students some of the enthusiasm you have for your life’s career. In the U.S. I worked for the U.S. Geological Survey, first doing research in Denver, and then coming to the National Center in Reston to help run the Survey’s $18 million scientific publications program. Outside my work activities, I have collected military history books for 25 years, and I have donated several thousand to university libraries. I enjoy biking, working out at the gym, photography, and going to the theater. My wife and I raise funds for a local cat rescue team. I am a huge worldwide supporter of the Big Cats - and the little ones too!
