Megan: Perth Amboy tutor

Certified Tutor

I graduated from Truman State University in May 2014, with a degree in Psychology and dual minors in music and disability studies. While in college, I loved to help students of all ages succeed at the classes in which they were struggling most at. Watching things "click" for them gave me a joy, and I loved to watch them learn about themselves. Now that I have graduated, I was looking for ways to continue to tutor and came across Varsity Tutors. I love working through problems and helping students understand concepts, not just individual problems. I believe in starting at the basics, and ensuring that students know what they need to know.
I have tutored students of all ages and abilities and feel confident in my knowledge to be able to teach. I have tutored 3-5 grade students in countless subjects at an after-school program, tutored college students in advanced science and math, and taught ACT prep classes (both to classes and individually) in all subjects. I currently work with adults with Autism, and have experience educating children with special needs. I have learned through my experience that enabling students and being patient are 2 very important skills to have when working with any student.
My past year and a half has consisted of being a team leader for AmeriCorps, where I mentored 5-11 18-24 year olds and worked with 5 different non-profits. I also worked for Feed My Starving Children, where I honed my public speaking skills. I now work at Alternatives for People with Autism, working with adults with Autism. I recently moved to Minneapolis and I love it here!

When I needed help in school, I was always embarrassed to ask. I don't want any student who I am helping feel embarrassed, belittled, or stupid. I will treat them as they would like to be treated, and work to help them succeed and feel confident in their abilities.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session, I would find out what the student's strengths and weaknesses are, and show them how to use these to their advantage for the specific assignment they need help with.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

It's important to teach a student study skills. A student may also learn better from doing, from reading, or from listening or watching lectures. I will help them find what works best so that they can use this to their advantage in learning.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would back-up to previous skills and concepts that the student needs to solve the current skills and concepts. If the student understands these, they will have an easier time learning new skills. I would also find different ways to teach this skill or concept, and help them do many sample problems.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Getting to know the student's learning style is important, as is knowing the test dates or due dates for the assignment in which I am helping the student. I hope to start with basics to find where the student is struggling, but this all depends on time restraints.
