From the moment I first lost myself in the pages of a book, I knew that reading would be more than just a hobbyit would become a cornerstone of my identity and a lens through which I view the world. My love for reading has not only shaped my academic journey but has also fueled my passion for helping students unlock the transformative power of learning. I believe that when students are equipped with the right support, they can become confident, curious, and capable individuals.
My journey in education began with informal tutoring during high school, helping peers with English literature and writing. That experience ignited a deeper commitment, and I have since worked with students in a variety of settingsranging from classroom support roles to one-on-one academic coaching. I've guided students through essay writing, helped build their reading comprehension, and supported them in mastering test prep strategies. Each student presents a unique opportunity to make a difference, and I find immense joy in helping them reach their academic goals.
I earned my undergraduate degree in Psychology with a minor in Special Education from Norfolk State University and my graduate degree from Old Dominion University in Reading where I deepened my understanding of literature, critical theory, and writing. My academic background has given me a strong foundation in both the content I tutor and the pedagogy behind effective teaching.
I tutor a variety of subjects, including English Language Arts, Writing, Reading Comprehension, Test Preparation (Praxis), and Study Skills. Of all these, English literature and reading comprehension are my favorites. There's something truly magical about helping a student connect with a character, understand a complex theme, or find their voice through writing. I aim to cultivate a genuine appreciation for reading in every student I work with.
My teaching philosophy centers around patience, encouragement, and adaptability. I believe that learning should be student-centered and that tutoring should be an empowering experience, not a stressful one. My style is empathetic and supportiveI listen carefully, celebrate progress, and tailor my methods to fit each learner's strengths and challenges.
Outside of academia, I enjoy creative writing, long walks with an audiobook in hand, and exploring independent bookstores. I also volunteer with local literacy programs to help promote reading in underserved communities.
Helping students isn't just what I doit's who I am. Every tutoring session is an opportunity to share my passion for reading, support a student's journey, and spark a love of learning that lasts a lifetime.
