We've had the BEST experience with VT! Our tutor has helped my middle schoolers math grades come up from a D to an A for our 8th grader and from a D to a B for my 6th grader. I'm beyond pleased with how she connected with my boys.

We covered circle properties. Specifically, we went through the definition of radius, diameter, circumference, and area of a circle. The student was strong at these concepts. We practiced indirect uses via my textbook to get him practice in abstract uses of circle properties. The student picked up the patterns of problems we were seeing without much trouble.

Today we worked on vertical multiplication involving two-digit numbers. At first, she was a little rusty with her times tables, but it came back to her quickly. We reviewed the fundamentals of vertical multiplication, which she remembered pretty quickly even though it had been a while since we practiced it. She will still need more practice to make those fundamentals stick, but overall I'm satisfied with the speed through which we're moving through the material. She'll be ready for fractions soon.

We had an extra tutoring session with the student today to review the material before the test. Various probability problems, problems on finding the expected value, combination and permutation problems, and binomial expansion problems were in the review packet. He worked very well. My only suggestion to him before the test would be to read the question of each problem carefully and check that he understands it correctly.

The student and I worked on the homework for sections 5.1 and 5.2. This covered extrema, the mean value theorem, and monotonicity and concavity. In addition to becoming comfortable with the mean value theorem, most of the homework was aimed at discovering extrema and then using the first and second derivative tests to identify the kind of extreme each represented, as well as interpreting them in a biological context.

Today, we went over the student's biology assignment. She said that they have been doing biochemistry and organic molecules repeatedly for a while. We decided it was because it's a hard topic, and they don't fully understand it yet. So, we went over organic molecules again, and she seems to be improving with them, especially when it comes to prefixes and naming organic compounds.
