We reviewed the flashcards for the alphabet, which the student did well on. Then we did a worksheet on sight words in sentences. Next was a worksheet on sentence completion, choosing the right word for the picture. Lastly we went over vocabulary for a story on musicians. Having his grandmother check on him was helpful in keeping him focused.

This week we checked the student's reading homework, he completed his class homework, and worked on a reading passage about feeding chickens. He did very well on all of his assignments this week and seems to be showing marked improvements with his focus and concentration. He still has a ways to go, but he is working much better than when we started. For homework, I gave him a worksheet for chapter 3 and told him to finish the reading passage.

Today the student and I finished the final draft of his house description--I thought the result was very good and he did too. I then moved on to give him an overview of what to expect in the next few years of literature class just to give him a quick preview before his first day of school. This included going over grammar and proper usage, writing style (diction, syntax, and tone), and a short introduction to the idea of symbolism in literature.

The student focused on reading the first chapter of his new book, Dragon Masters. As he read we stopped to discuss the plot, the setting, and the characters, as well as defining and discussing point of view. To finish the session he began his five-sentence summary of the main idea of the chapter.

The student worked really hard during today's session. We began by correcting grammatical errors in paragraphs. We were able to focus on punctuation. He also worked to correct spelling errors. Next, we had a mini lesson on run-on sentences. Although he is able to determine the necessary components for compound and complex sentences, he had difficulty inserting commas in the proper places to change the run-on sentences. We also worked on vocabulary building exercises. He was very knowledgeable about the meanings of various words. The three words that proved challenging for him were exotic, doctrine, and servile. After learning the definition, he was able to use them correctly in sentences. He will be introduced to new vocabulary terms each week. In closing, we worked on a quick write in order to strengthen brainstorming skills in writing. He appeared engaged in the lesson.

Today, we worked on reading fluency at a Level K. The student read 90 words per minute which is a huge improvement from the other day when he only read 59 words per minute. We also worked on identifying the causes and effects in sentences. We also created our own effect when we were given different causes. Also we worked on adding quotation marks to sentences to show when a person is speaking in a sentence.
