The student is retaking a test tomorrow, so we went over the problems that she got wrong on the test. We really focused on problems where she had to solve for a variable with a fraction involved. I gave her several practice problems in addition to the test problems. She understands how to find equivalent fractions before addition or subtraction can be done. We also worked a little bit on word problems where she has to create the problem with the variable and then solve it.

The student is having a tough time with translating word problems into expressions. I tried to teach him different strategies that will help him understand the question being asked and help him analyze the given information. We worked through many problems but towards the end decided that we would move on to a different concept and come back to word problems later. I quickly taught him the properties of exponents and how to simplify radical expressions. He was able to do these problems with ease.

The student and I reviewed her English and math homework and focused on some new math problems for the ACT (set 5 online). She did great! We went over a few questions that were tricky. I think she's going to do amazing on this test! I'm so excited for her!

Today the student and I did a blitz overview of differential calculus. He has never taken a calculus course before, so the material was completely new to him. We had talked previously about slopes and tangent lines, and so most of our discussion was centered around that approach. The language is a large barrier for him, which makes it difficult to understand how to begin setting up a problem. We worked through several problems involving first and second derivatives and one on maximizing profit. Helping him to visualize what is being asked and how to approach helped him to understand a great deal better.

We went over force vectors, friction equations, linear motion equations, projectile and quasi-projectile motion equations and their questions. We also went over geometric construction of angular bisectors, parallel and perpendicular bisectors.

Today was our first session. The topic for today was formal charges and how you assign them to specific atoms. After that we spiced things up a notch by looking at the ways how you determine a formal charge of an entire molecule and how it is affected by the formal charges of its constituents and vise-versa. And the last was how you construct the molecules knowing only the atoms that comprise them. The student learned quickly the concept of formal charge and was enthusiastic about the topic.
