Tutoring review by Vincent in San Clemente, CA
Today, we looked at material for the student's upcoming test over logarithm rules. She was familiar with most of the information, but had questions on how to apply it into some word problems. I had her write each part of the problem out rather than leaving some parts for mental math, and this helped her find the solution a lot more easily. I had her work extra problems out of her textbook so she could further familiarize herself with the necessary setup. With these, she was consistently able to find the right answer. At the end, I had her complete problems that I wrote myself, and she had little difficulty with them.

She received a practice booklet from her school teacher. She has definitely shown some progress since the 1st session, both in skills and confidence. She was excited to report that she was raising her hand with answers quite a bit in class. We are working through some of the more mid-level pre-algebra questions now.

Tonight we went through a journal article about structural equation modeling (SEM). The student's assignment was to read the article and evaluate the statistical analysis. We discussed the ways in which SEM was and was not appropriate. The researchers who wrote the article seemed to be unfamiliar with SEM and so there was a lot to criticize. She was able to get a good idea of what the article lacked and it helped her understand the value of looking at published studies with a critical eye.

Tutoring review by Gabriel in San Clemente, CA
We reviewed the following concepts: average rate of change/slope of a line, rational zeroes theorem, long division for polynomials, determining factors, understanding bounds and narrowing possible zeroes, and the difference between a zero and a factor Before getting into new material, we went over what he got incorrect on his previous quiz. He seemed to know polynomial long division pretty well, before we started to go over it. I explained that he needs to write out each step and that you always need to be asking yourself if the answer makes sense. After long division, there was a section on synthetic division. Because the two are used to solve the same problems, I evaluated how proficient he was with each and realized he should always use long division.
