I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Each student is different, therefore, my teaching philosophy is to find out his/her strength and weakness, then come up with a personalized way of teaching.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By giving them assignments they are interested in and letting them know I am available to help them but won't do their work for them.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By encouraging them often. Learning a language can be difficult, especially if there is very limited opportunity to practice. I would encourage my students when they have done something right and let them know they are making good progress.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would first try to find out why, then try a few different ways to help him/her to understand the concept better. Sometimes repetition is needed and can be very helpful.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

First, make sure they understand all the vocabularies in the reading, then see if they are at the right reading level. I usually suggest reading something different but in the same level to see what happens, then start from there.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Keep the lessons fun and interactive. Make the lesson interesting by encouraging students to participate.
