I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I am a graduate of the S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and the College of Arts and Sciences at Syracuse University. I obtained a duel degree in both English Textual Studies and Magazine Journalism. As that indicates, I love writing and literature and they are a couple of my favorite subjects to teach. I also love books and reading in general, as well as creative writing and poetry which are a couple passions of mine. I also could be caught coaching high school volleyball, out for an afternoon horseback ride, or singing loudly into my car windshield at a red light.
Everybody has that one teacher from high school that impressed upon them the realization that their dreams and reality do not have to lie down separate paths of life. For me it was my high school English teacher. I had never heard any one read a poem about a groundhog with more awe and inspiration in my life, nor had such visible inspiration ever unlocked the meaning of something for me so clearly before then. All of the sudden Richard Eberhart’s poem about what I previously deemed road kill was not just accessible to me, but it was something I could use to access meaning and history in a whole new way. All simply because of the way it was taught to me.
As an undergraduate at Syracuse University I became a tutor with the SU Literacy Corps. I wanted a job that would put me to better use than Food Services. Instead of shelling out pizza slices I decided to help fifth graders learn how to spell words like “angle,” which had to be specified as something that did not have white, feathery wings and a halo. I worked with elementary school children in the Syracuse City School district, honing their writing skills one-on-one, completing difficult homework assignments, talking in a group setting about reading comprehension, and the teacher’s daily lesson plans. Connecting with the students over their work put me on the other side of the learning process. I ardently wanted to create a fraction of the inspiration in the kids I worked with that my high school English teacher introduced to me.
I am currently working with high school students on a volunteer basis to improve their writing and essay structure. It is very similar to the sort of assistance I can provide for students through Varsity in addition to SAT and ACT English and Writing prep, Regents test prep, college essay writing, ESL, Literature, essay editing and grammar, reading comprehension, and many other areas of literacy and communications.

Excited to meet and work with you!
