Julian: West Covina tutor
Certified Tutor
I am graduate of the University of Connecticut with a degree in economics and a minor in entrepreneurship. I have years of experience in tutoring students in Spanish, English and Math, particularly students from low-income housing and English-as-a-second-language learners. I tutor all ages from elementary school all the way up to college students and genuinely love to learn and help people succeed. I believe that establishing a rapport with students is crucial for learning to take place and I feel that relevant, real-world examples are necessary to help students make connections and fully grasp different concepts.

What is your teaching philosophy?
I feel that students and teachers both have a lot to learn from each other and that the teaching experience should be a reciprocal one.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would make sure to establish a rapport and find some common ground with the student. I would like to get to know a little more about them to find out different ways to tailor my lesson to their interest.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I think the best way to accomplish this is to provide them with real-world examples of what they are being taught so that they can use what they have learned to make their everyday lives better.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would accomplish this by helping them stay focused and by encouraging them when they are feeling down or frustrated.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would try my hardest to listen to them and let them illustrate exactly which part is giving them trouble.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I try to break down sentences and even words into sections in order to give them the reasons behind the sentence and word structures.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I think the best way to accomplish this would be to give them real-world examples and show them how the subjects they are studying could help make their lives better and more fulfilling.
