What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that all students have their own way of learning, and I hope to accommodate all of them to help students reach their full potential.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would first discuss the problem areas with the student and figure out the best way to approach them. I would have the student try different problems and show me their approaches in order to gain a feel for their knowledge.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would help them by having them do practice problems. Practicing is one of the best ways to advance their knowledge, and by having them do it on their own before asking for help they will eventually learn to become independent.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help a student by moving on to different problems and reassuring students of their strengths.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would do my best to explain the concepts and demonstrate skills in a way for them to understand.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would work the student through the passage.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

The most useful strategy I have found is to have the student work me through the problem so I can see their thinking and approach. Students who often say they don't know how to do a problem end up being surprised with what they can come up with.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would show them different approaches to the subject.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Depending on the subject, I would have them repeat information back to me or show me that they can work through a similar problem without help.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I would do this by walking them through the subject and making sure they understand basics before attempting anything on a larger sale.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I would have the student explain to me what they are struggling with or do some practice problems and show me their approach to the problems.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I would first see what the student needs help with, and then I would provide practice problems and teaching for those problem areas.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use often use practice problems and examples.
