Certified Tutor

I am an Instructional Designer in a Professional Development Department. Through my teaching experiences in an elementary/middle Progressive school, in several international school systems and through facilitating adult educational material, I have learned how to work with a wide variety of individuals. I feel confident not only working with different age groups and ethnicity's but in finding out what motivates each of them and helps drive their desire to learn.

My background in art and advertising- undergraduate- also provides me with unique skills and tools to help students explore a variety of learning methods, depending on the subject.

I love working with individuals and getting to know them better as I help guide them in the area of their struggles.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I follow the progressive education model, whereby learning should be hands-on and fun. I try to teach students to love learning. This will ultimately help them intrinsically want to learn and become better in whatever academic area they are struggling.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would get to know the student and evaluate their level in whatever they are being tutored. Mostly I would develop a connection and a teacher/student relationship.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help them by teaching them skills to proof their work, to search for answers and to improve their study habits.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Depending on the student I would find out what excites them. If they are motivated by competition, I would create a competitive challenge for them. If they are motivated by success, I would make sure they see they are succeeding in even the smallest tasks in the subject... etc.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would try to break down the skill or concept into edible chunks that they can build on.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would make sure the reading was age/grade appropriate and then try to help by comparison to things they can comprehend. This is really a difficult question to answer without the details, so I would have to delve into the situation and then target a plan of action.
