Certified Tutor

Hello Everyone!

I'm a recent graduate from the University of North Carolina Charlotte with a BS in Biology. I have a passion in biological systems and the chemistry of things! I have over 5 years of experience tutoring science at secondary and a college level. Ever since my undergraduate career, I knew I had a talent in teaching others what I know. As per recommendation from my professors, I started as a supplemental instructor for college chemistry-CHEM 1251! It was such a wonderful experience working with other students and helping them achieve their goals in mastering chemistry! After that, I was hooked! I continued as a SI leader for most of my undergrad.

My tutoring style is unique in a sense where I make sure my student has a solid foundation! Mastering science courses is not an easy task, but with practice and creativity it can be fun and easy to retain!

When I'm not tutoring I enjoy cooking, blogging, traveling and skiing!

What is your teaching philosophy?

My main philosophy is to make sure the student has a solid foundation! I make sure my students feel comfortable with one concept before moving on to the next.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session I will typically ask what type of help the student is expecting. My students always come first! I like to set realistic goals with my students and make sure we are on the same page! Let's achieve big things!

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

You won't need a tutor forever! By teaching students effective study habits, and by helping them master skills they need to help them retain and connect concepts together, students can be independent learners!

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Motivation is a key part of success! By setting realistic goals, and seeing the big picture, a student can stay focused and motivated.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would try more than one way to help the student understand. Some students are more visual, and others are more hands on or auditory! Where there is a will, there's a way.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I always tell my students to be mindful when they read. Take it slow, and write notes if you have to. The more you read, the more you get hooked on reading.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Especially in chemistry, I find that working on multiple example problems together is essential to get to know the best way the student learns and retains new information!

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would set realistic goals, keep them motivated and on track! Sometimes you don't enjoy a certain subject, but I believe that if you're good at something you will learn to love it!

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Mini quizzes, problem sets, and I like to ask my students to give a mini lesson on what they learned. That helps me know for sure if they have the concept down!

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By giving them a solid foundation in the subject, and putting extra attention on the difficult material.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

My student's needs always come first. I understand that each student has his or her own unique learning style. Together, we will find a strategy that works best.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

If I explain a concept a certain way and the student still doesn't quite understand, I will find another way until the student is confident with the material!

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Student's textbook, a pen and paper, and a computer!
