I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

I have always liked math and languages. Also, I have always enjoyed teaching! It doesn't matter to me if the students feel passionate about the subject or not, or if they are really good at the subject or not. All I care about is having students who want to learn and get better. If you are really struggling with the material and want to improve your grades, I am here for you. I don't mind reviewing with you the material again and again, as long as you are committed to eventually learn it. If you are passionate about math or Spanish, and you just want to become the best in your class, I am here for you as well.

What is your teaching philosophy?

If we want a student to learn, all we need is a student who wants to learn the material and a tutor who knows the material and is passionate about teaching. I am that tutor that is waiting for the student that's ready to learn.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know the student. We would go over the student's hobbies and interests, and also the student's knowledge background about the material to study. Something that is also very important is what motivates them to learn the material It could be that they only want to get a better grade, or that they will need it for college. This response will automatically determine how we will study the material.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Every time the student learns something new I would ask them to do a new exercise and to explain it to me. Then I would give the student some homework and on the next session I would have the student explain that material to me.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I like to begin with a few minutes of casual conversation. This helps establish a good relationship. Then, the student is more open to discussing the things they are struggling with, and the tutoring session is more effective.
