I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

I find great joy in teaching math and science. Over the past few years I have had the pleasure to teach these subjects to both elementary school students, in an environmental education camp, and fellow college students, as a peer tutor. In these positions, I found great gratification in seeing a student have an epiphany in learning. I promote this learning by making analogies and other connections that the student not only relates to, but also finds interesting. In this manner I am not only able to make lessons exciting, but I also become energized myself. In the end my student always leaves with a fresh perspective, added strength in a previously weak subject area, and an increased passion for learning.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I teach through stories and analogies. Giving a dry definition never works well, but by making the lesson interactive, the student is far more motivated to learn. Therefore, I only do a fraction of the talking while the student explains, acts, and learns.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

The first session is an important time to understand exactly how much the student understands. By asking simple questions, I am able to get a feeling for what areas need to be focused on. This lesson is also an important time to establish a relationship. A tutor should be a peer, who can help and guide the student, in a friendly manner, to the proper answer.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

When tutoring, one is often tempted to simply supply the student with the answer. However, through practice, I understand that it is important to guide the student, and let them do most of the work. I simply take a step back, and supervise the learning, simultaneously motivating while also assuring the lesson is kept on track.
