Alexis

Certified Tutor

I began my tutoring career seven years ago while a Freshman at Georgetown University, where I majored in Spanish and Sociology. I initially tutored English (Grammar & Mechanics) assisted with drafting essays and lengthier papers for a variety of subjects, and helped my students to enhance their study skills.

Tutoring soon became something I greatly enjoyed. I loved watching my students progress in their studies as they began to genuinely enjoy the learning process! Later in my career, I added Spanish as a subject that I tutored. I tutored students at the college level in Beginners and Intermediate Spanish.

I was so happy to add Spanish to my repertoire of tutoring subjects because it is a personal favorite. Learning Spanish is fun and exciting! It has been an integral part of my life since when I first began learning it at the age of 14. However, I rapidly learned because I immersed myself in Spanish music, television, and culture. I also traveled to the Dominican Republic in the Fall of 2011 for a semester of study abroad.

Since graduating with my Bachelor of Arts in Spanish from Georgetown University, I have continued to immerse myself in the Spanish language and use it as much as possible. Besides my interest in tutoring, I am also an avid singer. I have studied voice for about ten years now. I have sang at weddings and like to record professionally in my spare time.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Every person has a unique learning style that must be observed and catered to. I like to assess where my students currently are, and take an active approach to improving their knowledge in a certain subject area. I believe that learning is fun. Once challenges are met, we often feel rewarded.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

It is important to me to encourage my students and to let them know when they are doing well. Once I identify their strengths, I can help them enhance in these areas while also actively working on weaknesses.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would work on identifying where the disconnect exists, and then create multiple learning plans and assessments to introduce the material in different ways.
