"A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops." -Henry Adams

I hold a A.B. from the University of Chicago in Visual Art. During my time as an undergraduate I also took three years of biology courses, worked in gene sequencing and plant molecular biology labs, and, as a TA, taught undergraduate discussion and lab classes. I held a National Merit Finalist scholarship and received multiple grants from the Student Fine Arts Fund to make and exhibit art. I completed the Teach Baton Rouge alternative teacher certification program and obtained Louisiana L1 certification in Biology and K-12 Art. I also hold a Virginia SOE for those same subjects and grade levels. I have three years of teaching experience in the East Baton Rouge Parish School System. In 2011, I was a National Crew Leader with the Student Conservation Association. I recently completed my M.A.Ed. in Gifted Education at the College of William & Mary. This fall, I will begin my Ph.D. in Art Education at Virginia Commonwealth University. I have experience providing individualized instruction in a variety of public, private, and nonprofit settings with students from grades 3 12, including the East Baton Rouge Parish Credit Recovery Program. I believe that my training in Gifted Education has prepared me to provide highly effective interventions and/or acceleration for students starting at all ability levels. I believe strongly that all children deserve access to a high quality education.

I welcome the opportunity to help your child reach his or her maximum potential.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Each student has the right to be met at his or her level and to be helped to develop to his or her highest potential. I believe that differentiation is necessary because of its relationship to a concept that occupied much of my time and deliberation while I studied art in Chicago: individual autonomy. Individual autonomy is the capacity of a human being to make intentional independent choices.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would begin with a needs assessment to determine the student's current ability level and academic goals. This information will help develop an individualized plan for instruction.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

The ability to become an independent learner requires practice. I can help students set goals and learn new metacognitive skills that will help them succeed in any subject.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

In any endeavor that's worth pursuing there will be challenges. The way to stay motivated is to focus on the end goals students will achieve through hard work. I can help students set goals and then break these final outcomes into a series of less daunting and more immediately accomplishable smaller tasks. As students complete these smaller sub-goals they will see that they now have a record of achievement. Small successes build up over time into big accomplishments.
