After growing up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and attending college on the east coast at Princeton University, the warm weather of Houston is a nice change of pace! I have lived in Houston since January of 2015 and have come to love the city. At Princeton, I was a four-year member and senior co-captain of the women's crew team. My passion for the sport led me to coach both high school and middle school students in my hometown of Milwaukee, and I loved working with the students and helping them achieve their goals. I am incredibly excited to be working with students once again! Outside of work and tutoring, I love cheering on the Green Bay Packers, exploring the city and watching the food network.

What is your teaching philosophy?
I would get to know the student and how they learn, and then adapt methods and utilize strategies that they respond best to!
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Get to know the student--not just academically, but personally! Learning is more fun when you're working together with someone you know and like. Next, I would take some time to understand where the student is at and where they need my help specifically.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I would give them the tools they need and make sure they know how to use them.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Set attainable goals and work toward them. Set checkpoints to work toward and achieve along the way to show how much progress is being made.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would try new approaches to the same concept and find new resources that might explain the skill or concept in a new way.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Recommend that they read things that they enjoy outside of tutoring and school. A great way to get better at reading comprehension is just to READ!
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I would break concepts up piece by piece. Don't just throw all the information at them right away and overwhelm them. As they achieve success and master certain areas, it will motivate them to be successful in other areas!
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would try to find real-world applications of that subject and show them WHY they might be interested or want to learn more.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Utilize practice quizzes to measure progress. Ask the student to explain or talk through particular concepts or material in order to demonstrate understanding.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I would start with the basics and work from there. I would also show them that they can figure it out on some level and challenge them from there.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I would ask the student, ask their parents, and utilize practice tests to assess.
