Certified Tutor

I believe that every day is knowledge and experience gained. Currently, I work as a freelance academic researcher and writer with a great deal of editing experience. I am a recent graduate from Guilford College and hold a BA in English arts with a minor in Early World History, but I have also studied world religions and art history. I am proficient in most writing styles including MLA, Chicago, AP, and APA. I love literature and favor British literature prior to 1890, with a special affinity for the Gothic.
I am always willing to learn and teach myself if necessary in order to help another gain a better understanding of a subject I can help with. In the past, I have always used my skills to help others in subjects which have come easy for me such as English, history, and religion. I have used my skills to aid friends and fellow students in improving not only their understanding of difficult texts while helping them to improve both their grammar and writing skills, but also improving their grades. Over the years, I have acquired a list of useful resources which are often helpful in teaching particular skills in the arenas of English literature and grammar. When trying to build an understanding, I have often incorporated these resources and been careful to point out key elements intended to guide them toward relevant connections and encourage them to develop their own thoughts and conclusions.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would ask that s/he identify the key argument or thesis of the text in question and then ask that they note topic sentences as a means to identify key points within the text. If s/he is unable to do so, I would then suggest identifying what they felt to be significant points throughout and work in a reverse order to identify the key argument.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate a student's needs by asking questions about what they feel they are struggling with and reviewing past work.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Keep it interesting.
