I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

What is your teaching philosophy?

"If they can't learn the way we teach, we teach the way they learn"- O. Ivar Lovaas. I believe that every individual is wired differently. It's irrational to believe that a child is incapable of understanding a subject or to label them as "bad" at a certain subject, simply because they are struggling at grasping the concepts that are being introduced to them. These kinds of setbacks not only frustrate young students but psychologically influences students to give up at that subject because they are simply "bad" at it. A more effective approach is to figure out how the student learns and cater to their individual needs. Adolescence is an important time for students to mold their brains. Every child is wired differently, so instead of using the cookie cutter method of teaching, I want to provide the kind of kind of support specific to each student's need.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

During a first session with a student, I would take the time to get to know the student. Their interests, their strengths and weaknesses, the manner in which they learn and their perception of school, learning and the specific subject that they are struggling with.
