I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Karin

Certified Tutor

I completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Math Education and Spanish Education at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. I also completed a Master's in Educational Technology through an online program at Boise State University, so I am no stranger to using online platforms to teach and learn. Since graduating from Concordia, I have worked as a high school Math Teacher (teaching Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus and AP Calculus), a PowerSchool Administrator and Technology Integration Specialist, and an Instructional Designer. As a teacher, I taught students in grades 9-12 and was an advisor to students in grades 7-12. I currently hold a teaching license in the state of Minnesota for Math (5-12) and Spanish (K-12). While I can tutor in a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about Math and Spanish. I loved studying these subjects in college and relish the opportunity to help a new generation of students love them as well. I call myself an education enthusiast because I believe so strongly in the ability of education to transform students' lives, and it is always my hope that my passion rubs off on the students I work with so that they might become lifelong learners themselves. I would describe my teaching style as "supportive independence" since I believe strongly that students will struggle to learn if they don't feel supported but will never become self-sufficient learners without a teacher guiding them to independence. I typically start a tutoring relationship by building a layer of trust, communication, and support and then gradually move towards independence as the student experiences success and gains confidence. This looks different for each student, but I know that each student has the ability to be successful given enough time and support. I am also dedicated to equity in education and continually work to learn about and employ culturally relevant teaching techniques, Universal Design for Learning principles, and more. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, cooking, shopping, hiking, and spending time with loved ones.
