The joy of teaching is helping a student link their existing knowledge to the new information being presented. Sometimes that is best done through stories, sometimes through examples, and sometimes through experiences. As a retired middle school teacher I have been able to experience that joy countless times. My students and their needs (and sometimes their preferences) would guide my methods and strategies to help them reach their potential. School should be a safe place to learn, no matter the number of repetitions or different learning modalities a student needs. Students do the best they can on any given day, and sometimes that best varies from what it was yesterday or last week or what it will be tomorrow or next week. A teacher should be able to recognize this and make room for individual learning needs. Unfortunately schools are not always able to accomodate students that way. That's when a student should see me for tutoring.

I love reading and writing, especially speculative and science fiction. I make aromatherapy bath and skin products, and I sew soft sculpture dolls. Gardening is one of my favorite activities, even though I am scared of most bugs and have just learned to look at earthworms without shuddering. I also enjoy road trips, and plan to travel more when it is safe so I can see all my friends who live in different cities on the East Coast. My favorite times are those I spend with my adult son.
