Certified Tutor

I received two Bachelor's degrees from East Carolina University: one in English and the other in Political Science. I received a certificate in Technical and Professional Communication. I also attended ECU for graduate school; I received a Master of Arts in English with a concentration in both creative and technical writing. When I wasn't writing poetry and nonfiction essays, I was concentrating on technical editing and grammar. While I graduate school, I had the opportunity to tutor student-athletes in English courses including literature and composition. I have taught and supported students in various English-related subjects to include but not limited to: composition, creative writing, business writing, technical writing, research and citing, oral presentations, social media, and graphic design, etc.

My teaching experience has spanned across two-year community colleges and four-year HBCUs. I have taught in a higher education setting for nearly 10 years. From traditional students to veterans, I have experience teaching and supporting a vast array of students with a vast array of backgrounds. I feel strongly about teaching each student where they are respectively and individually. I am very keen on researching and citing, as I worked in university libraries for many years. I am guided by a learner-centered approach. I think it is important to meet students' needs and develop their interests and values. I believe that learning is an individual process of making sense of a student's experiences and beliefs. My approach to teaching is to organize my courses into a series of key topics and spend time preparing clear lectures on each, as well as fostering engagement through discussions. I tend to guide students to think as professionals, as opposed to beginners.
