We've had the BEST experience with VT! Our tutor has helped my middle schoolers math grades come up from a D to an A for our 8th grader and from a D to a B for my 6th grader. I'm beyond pleased with how she connected with my boys.

Today, the student and I finished the practice problems provided by her teacher for the exam. She was able to finish most of the problems without much correction. I hope she will get some rest before her exam. I have provided additional practice problems for her review. I am hoping this test will turn out better than the last. She is really smart and I want her to do well!

He asked for help with substitution. Again he runs into to problems when he tries to rush through a problem. He understands substitution pretty well now though. We worked with some trigonometric identities and while he's not going to be tested on them right now the more we work with them currently the better they'll be understood in the future.

Today we worked through another homework assignment. The material covered periods, rotations and solving for trig functions using the sine and cosine graphs. Once the graphs were explained to her and she realized the graph connections with the unit circle, she caught on very quickly and had no problems finishing her homework.

The student and I spent the first half of our session working on an assessment exam sample reading passage. She had a bit more trouble with this one than usual (it was a fiction passage written at a bit of a higher level), but she did really well once we talked through it. She answered all the multiple-choice questions correctly and did pretty well on her short-answer question as well. We spent the second half of our session working on multiplication. She did her first three sets of 50 problems in under two minutes each! Our goal is always 50 problems in under two minutes, so that was a really great way to start the session. I gave her another five problems as "problems of the week" to work on for next time -- she's done a great job with that little exercise every week, and I think it's paying off!

The student and I studied for the ACT today. We talked about strategies for the writing section and for the reading section. We also worked on math problems. Homework: one section of reading - timing each passage for 8 minutes. One section of writing - timed for 30 minutes. Grade the section of math and determine if there is a theme of problems that the student struggles with or if it's just sporadic problems that he misses.
