Today we continued working on areas of composite figures. I continued to tell him to make the problems easier by breaking them up into simpler mini-problems. When he finished the homework, I created a few composite figures and told him to find the areas of them all.

We had to do some catching up for her upcoming test. We went over in detail how to find the area of function. We worked through how to find the area in terms of y and x. We moved onto finding the volume of a function rotated about a line and when to use the washer method vs the disk method. We also spent some time on how to visualize the shape created by the rotation. After working through the problems, the student was able to accurately do the problems herself.

We looked at the student's test to go over his mistakes and then started to work on the study guide his teacher gave him to prepare for the final. He knows a lot of the material pretty well, so we can concentrate on those areas where he might need a little more work.

Today we prepared for the student's exam this week. We covered scale factors when going from the larger figure to the lower figure, and we worked on explaining her answers through writing, using the necessary vocabulary. After covering those topics, and topics in her homework, we completed a full practice test, going over each question after they finished.

In our final session, the student and I started by going through some of the math questions that gave her trouble. Some specific topics we covered included how to spot combination trick problems, permutations, calculating degree totals in polygons, rationalizing the denominator and rates. After going through these math questions, we shifted our focus to the writing section for the remainder of the session. We went over how she should outline each type of essay, the structure that is expected, and some examples. We worked mostly on the analyze the argument essays as they gave her the most trouble. We talked about what kinds of assumptions and missing details to focus on, how to organize her thoughts into coherent paragraphs and how to structure her essay. Overall, I think she will do well on the GRE, and has significantly improved her math skills through the course of our sessions. Good luck!

The student and I went over solutions chemistry for her test. She did well, and it didn't take her long to figure out her problems with the dilutions mathematics. I advised her to practice those, but other than that, she seemed well prepared and ready to take the test after our session.
