What is your teaching philosophy?

Teaching must be based on understanding the dreams & goals of students. If you know those two things then you know how to inspire them!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In my first session I ask about the subject they are struggling with. I ask them about note taking & study skills. Also I ask for the contact information for the student's teacher so we can coordinate if needed.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By teaching note taking and study skills. This includes teaching shorthand and I also show students how to listen for important information. Also I remind them that if they don't know something at the end of class they should ask the teacher for help in class or after if they are shy.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I ask students about their goals in life so I can get them to realize that their education is a key part of them having the future they want.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would coordinate with the teacher so that my work and classwork are similar, which I find helps comprehension. I would also try other forms of teaching such as audio, video, & more.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I pick a book below grade level & ask the student to read the first two pages. From this I can see what they are actually weak in. Another thing I do is ask them questions as they read to see if they are taking in what they read.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

My best strategy is coordination with the students teacher; after that it would depend on the student, as each has different needs.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Let's take math for example. When a student struggles in this subject I engage them in it by showing how math affects every field. Even philosophy makes use of statistics.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I use mini tests and observation to see if student has understood. My best technique is asking them to explain to me what I just explained to them.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Step by step. I always keep student work so that along the way I can show them how they are improving. It helps to see progress.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Talking to them, the parents, and if I can the teacher.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

By speaking to students, parents, & teachers, and also by asking the student for input throughout the program.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Printed material & books, but for those with access I use my computer.
