I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I'm a current graduate student at the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy pursuing a Master of Public Policy degree with a concentration in Data Analytics. I graduated from uChicago in 2020 with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy. I center my teaching philosophy around confidence-building rooted in deep conceptual understanding. I enjoy tutoring a wide variety of subjects and grades, but I particularly enjoy getting to teach and develop the close-reading skills of my students. Close-reading, critical analysis, and clear writing are the foundations for any ELA, history, or social science class. Those are also some of the hardest skills to learn in a classroom setting. With our one-on-one time I'm able to get my students to more deeply and personally engage with the material, ultimately resulting in a richer understanding that corresponds directly to improved performance on assessments, essays, and standardized tests (particularly the AP exams). Additionally, I've always been one of those weird people who didn't hate their standardized test experience. As much as anyone can, I enjoy the puzzle of trying to figure out what the person who wrote each question is trying to get at. Moreover, I strongly believe that skill is learnable and through deliberate practice anyone can become confident in their ability to do well on AP exams and the ACT/SAT. In my free time I love playing pick-up ultimate Frisbee, and coaching local Middle and High School ultimate teams.
