Hello, my name is Tonya Turner and I am so glad to meet you! You are special and I can't wait to learn and grow with you!
I am a retired secondary Special Education teacher of 15 years! I graduated from Lynchburg College with my BA in Theater and my MA in Special Education and from Liberty University with my EdS. in Education specializing in Special Education: Teaching and Learning.
My teaching philosophy is that everyone can gain knowledge, it is just understanding that each person is different and unique and so is their learning style. I first try to understand the student and how they learn; and then I adapt the information and teach the student how to build on their strengths in order to reduce the impact of any areas of weakness they have.
My favorite area to teach is basic information, we often forget about the basics, not knowing this information will often stop a student cold because they don't understand why everyone else seems to know what or how something is done and they somehow missed it. Re-teaching the basics can often remove the stigma that 'I am just stupid and will never learn anything' emotion felt by the student.
This area is my sweet spot, I can help the student simply by just going back over the basics and working with them to gain an understanding of how and why they gain information the way that they do, showing them that they are perfectly capable and more than able of learning when given the tools needed to be successful! I want students to know you got this!
