Jacob: Roanoke tutor
Certified Tutor
My nontraditional educational background has given me a unique perspective on learning, which I bring to every tutoring session. I work with a diverse range of students, including middle and high school learners, undergraduate students, and adult learners. While I tutor a variety of subjects, I am particularly passionate about standardized test preparation, English Language Arts, and the social sciences.
My teaching style is flexible and student-centered, rooted in inquiry-based and Socratic methods. I aim to encourage critical thinking, curiosity, and confidence by tailoring my approach to each student's individual interests and abilities. Patience and adaptability are cornerstones of my sessions, and I strive to create an engaging learning environment that empowers students to become independent, motivated learners.
I believe in building meaningful connections with my students and providing them with unwavering support. My ultimate goal is their successwhether that means helping them master a challenging concept or connecting them with another resource better suited to their needs.

As an AuDHD adult I have the pleasure of a revolving door of very meaningful and intense hyperfixations. Currently I am learning (poorly) how to cross stitch and growing my collection of vinyls. I have also started teaching myself how to code and took on the seemingly impossible task of training my dog on my own. In a more traditional sense, I enjoy taking road trips the the mountains and camping after a day of hiking. I'm also a fan of podcasts and can't get enough Old Gods of Appalachia in my life. And while I dislike ice breakers, the question I ask all my new students is "If you were forced to speak on a topic with no restrictions, what would it be?" Honestly, I have a few, but I can give a full dissertation TedTalk style about the lives and relationship dynamics of the fine people of Dunder Mifflen Scranton from The Office or the galaxy far, far away.
