Varsity Tutors can help you give your child the Boston SSAT prep resources they need to prepare adequately for their upcoming exam. Whether your child will be taking the Middle, Upper, or Elementary Level SSAT, it is crucial to find a way to support them in their preparation efforts.
The SSAT evaluates your child's grade level appropriate aptitude in the subject areas of math, reading, and language. It is considered a reliable indicator of their knowledge level in these areas. Because of this, it is used by many private and independent schools in their admissions process. It will not be the only thing admissions officials consider; however, it is an essential factor. Continue reading to discover what is covered on the various levels of the SSAT and how Varsity Tutors can help you identify the right Boston SSAT prep solution for your child's academic needs.
What can Boston SSAT prep cover?
All three levels of the SAT include five distinct sections. Students will have questions in Quantitative, Reading, Verbal, Writing, and Experimental sections. The Writing and Experimental sections are not included as part of your child's score. It is important to note that the Writing section will be sent to all schools your child is applying to and will be reviewed by them. Because of this, it is important to include writing techniques as part of your child's SSAT preparation. The Experimental section is only for the creators of the test so that they can improve future additions of the SSAT.
The Quantitative section of the SSAT evaluates your child's ability with various math skills. The Middle and Upper levels of the SSAT include two portions for this section. The Elementary Level SSAT has only one Quantitative section. A variety of math skills will be included based on the grade level of your child. These can consist of basic math skills such as addition, multiplication, division, subtraction, fractions, shapes, as well as algebra and geometry concepts.
The Verbal and Reading sections of the SSAT evaluate your child's language skills and reading comprehension. Some of the specific skills they may need to review include identifying the main idea, noting the author's tone or purpose, determining the meaning of a word through context, analogies, synonyms, antonyms, prefixes, vocabulary, suffixes, root words, and a variety of other language skills.
Regardless of what skills your child needs to develop before taking the SSAT, a professional instructor can help them work towards accomplishing their goal.
How can a Boston SSAT prep class help my child prepare?
You have two enrollment options for your student. They can attend two-week or four-week classes. All classes are composed of individual sections. The modular design of our prep classes allows us to begin new sessions weekly, which makes it fast to get your child's SSAT prep started.
All classes are held in a secure online learning environment. This means you don't have to worry about extended commutes to take your child to and from class and you can continue with your normal routine while they receive the SSAT preparation assistance they need. While the learning environment may be digital, the classroom structure will be similar to other classes they have taken in school. The teacher will provide direct instruction to the group and may then encourage students to discuss concepts or work cooperatively together on assignments. These techniques work to foster a greater understanding of the subject being covered in the class.
Prep classes are ideal for students to enjoy working in dynamic learning environments and who receive a motivational boost from being surrounded by their peers. It is also a good solution for those students who need a comprehensive review and who thrive in structured educational environments.
How is working with a Boston SSAT tutor different from taking a prep course?
There are many key differences between working with a private instructor and taking a prep course. While neither is objectively better, one may be subjectively better for your family's particular situation. One noticeable difference between private tutoring and a prep course is the personalized instruction your child can receive with a tutor. Individualized instruction is impossible in a classroom setting. While in a classroom and instructor must teach the entire class. Classroom teachers must provide instruction that is generally accessible for the majority of students. They must also facilitate peer discussion and provide group and individual activities. Additionally, they must find time to answer individual student questions. This should not be seen as a deficiency in the classroom model. However, there is not a lot of time to spend with each student.
With private instruction, on the other hand, your child's personal instructor can devote their full attention to interacting with your child. They will have the time to learn about your child's individual learning style, academic weaknesses, academic strengths, and SSAT learning goals. This information can then be used to craft custom learning plans for private sessions. This enables the teacher to spend all of the instructional time they have with your child focused on helping them work towards developing the specific skills and subject area concepts most relevant to your child.
Another difference between prep courses and tutoring can be seen in the way the two are scheduled. Courses have predefined schedules that must be adhered to by all students while personal sessions can be scheduled individually to meet the needs of your child. You can schedule a private session on the weekend or throughout the week during regular business hours or in the evening.
Private sessions are ideal for students who excel with one-on-one instruction and for families with hectic or irregular schedules. How can I get my child started with Boston SSAT prep?

I love test taking and am a recent Dartmouth College graduate. I have experience with 12 AP exams, SAT (99th percentile), GRE, SAT subject tests, ACT, english, and much more. I enjoy adapting to individual students study and learning styles and making work more efficient and productive. In my spare time I run obstacle courses like Spartan Races.... I tailor individual study plans to help dedicated students reach their full potential with efficiency and accuracy.... I would ask what each student's strengths and weaknesses are, then go over a number of questions that address those concepts. I would repeat tough questions to ensure the student understood them, and provide the student some online resources they might find useful.
