Des Plaines ERB CTP Tutoring FAQ
Throughout the country, many schools rely on the results of Educational Records Bureau's Comprehensive Testing Program (CTP) to provide teachers of first- through eleventh-grade classrooms with detailed information about how effective instruction has been and how to best help each student succeed. The CTP consists of two types of tests per subject: achievement tests measure how your child's knowledge measures up against benchmarks in the specific educational curricula used at a given school, and reasoning tests measure the degree to which your child can understand abstract, complex relationships. Using these two types of tests in conjunction provides insight about how effective their instruction has been compared to their innate abilities.
All versions of the CTP include sections on reading and math, but depending on when your child takes the assessment, it may also analyze their abilities in other subjects. While listening skills are evaluated in first and second grades, more complex subjects like quantitative reasoning and vocabulary appear in more advanced grades as your child's education becomes more complete. Facing the CTP at any grade level can cause anyone anxiety, as the standardized testing environment can seem foreign and pressured compared to normal classroom evaluations. If you'd like to help your child prepare to face the CTP with confidence in his or her abilities, personal CTP tutoring might be just the thing to help you do so. Varsity Tutors can help you connect with dedicated CTP tutors from all over the world.
CTP tutors are familiar with all of the tests details, and can help your student prepare for the specific sections and question types he or she will be facing. Furthermore, tutors work to tailor each students CTP tutoring to his or her specific academic needs. Your tutor can analyze your child's current level of mastery of CTP material in order to design a customized learning plan to focus subsequent sessions on the concepts and question types that give your student the most trouble. With a personalized lesson plan, your child's tutor is prepared to teach to their learning style, a method that traditional education simply can't do because of the number of students in each classroom.
Your child's tutor can model test-taking strategies and techniques to give your child an edge when faced with questions where the answer is not immediately apparent, helping to build your child's confidence with the exam format and question types. These are important skills that can be implemented on nearly any standardized test that your child may face in the future, such as the SAT, SSAT, GMAT, and more. Furthermore, the tutor may provide your child with additional materials that are designed to support their preparation. These can include, but are not limited to, practice assessments, writing practice, and more.
When you arrange your child's tutoring sessions, you are free to schedule them as you please. If you have to work, you can have your tutor meet your child for face-to-face online tutoring sessions from the comfort of your computer. Or they can meet up at a local college campus, library, recreational center, or anywhere else for in-person meetings. Personal CTP tutoring offers the kind of flexibility that can't be achieved through any other form of instruction.
By helping your student bolster his or her weakest skills and patch gaps in his or her knowledge before they can cause trouble in later classes, personal CTP tutoring can not only help your student prepare to face this specific test, but also prepare to succeed in future academic endeavors. To learn more about the CTP tutoring options in your area or to begin scheduling your students first tutoring session, contact the Varsity Tutors directors today!

Recent Des Plaines ERB CTP Tutoring Session Notes
The student and I started going through topics in his review books. We focused on sample spaces, outcomes, and probability for a while. We also covered factoring and some of the more important factoring techniques, such as factoring quadratic trinomials, difference of squares binomials, and perfect square trinomials. We then began some review on basic properties of circles, such as area of central angles, inscribed angles, and the lengths of tangents, chords, and secants.
At today's session, the student wrote an essay in response to the essay prompt from a past U.S. History test. We talked about how to structure an essay and how to reference documents. I think that this exercise will help her to think about how to approach not only her upcoming essay, but also essay-writing in general.
The student and I reviewed two math tests today, and identified several types of problems that she wanted explanations on. Having worked on them for the remainder of the time, she is now much more confident.
Topics covered include correcting sentences for the writing section, passage reading practice, and math topics covering word problems, functions, and inequalities. Progress achieved was a better understanding of parallelism in sentences, reading strategies, and how to decode math problems of various topics.
The student and I finished going over his practice test from last time. We reviewed some math concepts that he encountered on the practice test, such as solving systems of equations, reading graphs, and calculating geometric areas. We then reviewed the Reading Comprehension strategies from last session and the student worked a full Reading Comprehension section using those strategies. We then scored the test and discussed the answers. Lastly, we discussed strategies for learning vocabulary words and I assigned him a list of vocabulary words to review, and make flash cards for the ones he does not know.
Once again me and the student went over some new topics for the Math level 2 exam. These topics included probability and conic sections. We also went over timing as he often did very well on practice tests but kept running out of time. Finally we went over mindset for the test. I told the student that he needed to really be confident in his own abilities and not to look at this test as an obstacle, but rather as a challenge or a game. I am confident he will do very well on the test.
