We've had the BEST experience with VT! Our tutor has helped my middle schoolers math grades come up from a D to an A for our 8th grader and from a D to a B for my 6th grader. I'm beyond pleased with how she connected with my boys.

The first student and I worked to strengthen her skills regarding fractions and multiplication. The second student and I focused on reviewing her trig unit for her upcoming exam. She is doing very well, and I'm proud of her progress. She feels comfortable using trig identities to solve triangles, and I believe she will perform well on her upcoming exam.

At parents request, we set placement exam prep aside to work on math for the middle school math exam the student is taking soon. She is very solid in her grasp of fundamentals and her calculations; she learned quickly new concepts such as the Pythagorean theorem and some "mental math" shortcuts I showed her (e.g. finding percents by moving decimal points rather than multiplying by decimal numbers). There were only a few problems for which she needed additional information; we drew out diagrams, referred to the math packet I provided, and explored various alternative problem-solving strategies.

We went over evaluation and distribution. The student struggled with distributing and combining unlike terms. She seems like a bright student. Her test had only a few avoidable mistakes. I went over how to show her work better for distribution. With being able to see her work better, it is easier to spot those mistakes.

We had a good session, mostly preparing for the next week of schoolwork. We covered scatterplots and correlations, reviewed standard deviation, and discussed regression a little. We went over a couple of examples in depth, as they involve multi-step processes, so the practice was good. Then, we finished up the session discussing the test she's having Monday, which is on normal distribution and z-scores. It sounds like she has a good handle on the material.

Tutoring review by Ronald in Blasdell, NY
In this session, we covered proof of trigonometric identities and simplifying trig expressions. The student is a strong student with goods skills. However, a weakness is the speed at which he works. He moves quickly through problems and sometimes makes mistakes, even though he does know how to arrive at the correct solution. I explained to him most problems at the pre-calc level are not designed to be complicated, and if he should encounter "difficult to resolve" problems in the future, he should go back over his work carefully and look for any mistakes that he may have made. He reported getting a "A" on a recent physics quiz.

We reviewed systems of equations, solving via graphing, and the substitution method. We then graphed a line and a parabola, and the student solved 2 problems each on his own. We then started reviewing an old Geometry assessment exam.
