Recent Escondido Tutoring Session Notes
The student and I wrapped up our studies on math today. We went over geometry, coordinate geometry and various trig problems. We also corrected problems from her previous math test. I was impressed because she knew how to do problems she previously left blank. She's making good progress. I am going to be out of town Wednesday - Monday, but she has homework assignments. She is to take her first full-length practice exam. This should be timed at 3 hours. I will correct it at our next session. She can also practice more ACT math problems, which are located on ACT's Web site. If she prints them out (or writes them), she can tackle them and we can go over any issues at our next session.

Although the student was away on vacation last week, he did a great job jumping back into his vocabulary, words with the ou and ow spelling patterns. After a breif review, he was able to use the words in context and then spell them with 80% accuracy.

Science: A bit of a rough patch today, but we talked about structure and what to do if you don't find an answer immediately. We still need to get some solid strategies for when we get stumped, but it's getting there. The student said that he practiced a reading test on his own over the course of the past week, and that he found it much easier than before we started practicing. We'll see how next week goes.

Reviewed sections 3.7, 4.1: factoring and solving quadratic equations. The student is basically relearning the material. Taught her that for all problems, have to find domain, range, zeros, x- & y-intercepts, and asymptotes. Figuring out what is being asked is the area in need of assistance. The student can do the math, but needs guidance.

Tonight's homework was two pages of spelling. We worked on the student's penmanship in forming letters properly while she completed her spelling. She is also still having difficulty with dictation. Her other homework was to read and answer questions.

The student and I completed a vocabulary exercise, using inference and critical thinking. We also did a logic puzzle and a math word problem. She continued her work on a story from school and was assigned a logic puzzle for homework.
