Tonight we stayed on probability. The class' progress was at geometric probability, but she needed practice on regular theoretical probability so she could follow the new material. Once we mastered regular probability, geometric was no big deal.

We covered types of rock and how they form. I showed the student a specific cell cycle diagram and she was able to predict how and why certain types of rocks formed. Then I let the student engage in a few practice problems from an Earth science assessment workbook. She felt comfortable with the material but had trouble interpreting graphs.

Today was my first meeting with this student. She plans to take the GRE in December and seems well-prepared in terms of books and time allotment. She has a couple of prep books, one of which is devoted entirely to math problems. She has already started studying and recently completed a short Math practice test. We went over her answers and discussed what areas of Math may need extra attention. I'm really impressed that she's starting to study so early and excited to work with someone who's so motivated!

Had the student do more writing practice, focusing on using similes and metaphors. I then discussed with her why using descriptive words and phrases is beneficial to writing. She seemed to understand it pretty well, and her writing is very good for her age.
