Tutoring review by Angi in Novato, CA
The student had math homework today that dealt with independent and dependent variables presented in tables. The first part of her homework was just about reading various situations and identifying the independent and dependent variable in each situation, and how they relate to one another. One the other side of her worksheet, she had actual function tables. It was up to her to figure out the missing numbers in the table and then find the equation that matched the data in the table, based on the input (x-variable) and output (y-variable) given. She did well with this. The last part of her homework required her to take an equation and fill out the input/output table based on the equation. She did well overall. Finally, we worked on some word problems that I pulled for her.

Covered: Geometry special triangles. The student had taken excellent notes during in-class instruction. The student declared it was helpful to have someone to "talk over" [analyze] the lesson with. The tutoring strategy was to use the student class notes to correlate each mathematical expression with its line/angle on the diagram. I gave the student extra practice by reviewing tutoring session notes/diagrams.

We worked on confidence intervals and hypothesis testing for proportions instead of means. We also worked on estimating the slope of the line of regression for a population using the same techniques.

We focused on coordinate algebra. The student already could identify points on a coordinate plane and was improving on operations of signed numbers. I introduced slope to her and gave her formal definitions as well as visuals. I showed her how to find slope based on a graph of a line. After a couple examples I showed her the second scenario in which there isn't a graph and all that is given are the coordinates. I showed her how to use the algebraic formula and she mastered it rather quickly. We ended the session practicing writing more technical essays (argumentative/ opinionated). She was able to write a rather strong piece complete with examples and backing of statements. She could have improved on the organization of the essay, but for the most part it was strong. I assigned her some work on slope.

Tutoring review by Harold in Novato, CA
During this meeting with the student, I was able to get a gauge on how things are going for her in the course so far. Everything appears to be going very well at this point. She did have a few questions about the "Central Dogma" of DNA. We used the remaining time to go through a presentation on the processes of DNA transcription and mRNA translation.

Tutoring review by Allen in Novato, CA
As a springboard into the study of French language and culture, we discussed an article from a French website. The title of the online article was "Le dormeur du val," which is also the title of a well known poem by Arthur Rimbaud. This cultural realia and history provided a basis for an exchange of questions and answers relating to both the language and the culture. At the end of the session, the student commented that it was useful as a means of studying the language.
