Tutoring review by Cynthia in Jacksonville, FL
We had a long session with the student working on the two papers she needs to finish for her PhD class. She worked especially on the first, going over the whole paper to make sure that she had a tight structure and that each section corresponded to her stated structure. She worked on transitions from one section to another, making sure that all ideas were explained clearly and concisely. She double-checked the original prompt to make sure that she was covering all the requirements. I gave her points to check as she is going over revisions. Then she created an outline for her second paper with approximate lengths and steps. The papers need to be in on this Monday. She seems to be absolutely on track to not only be able to get them in, but for them to be well written with ample research and original thought. Well done.

The student made great headways in getting a good understanding of all of the assumptions that are to be used to create pro forma financial statements. We will work on looking at how the flow of funds works and how all of the financial statements are connected and impacted by changes in sales, etc. We will continue tomorrow night on this assignment.

We covered vocab the student had to learn and practice for class. We also worked on the conditional tense. We then went back to the basics and worked on conversation to review those basics as well.

The student still felt he was having trouble on probability. Once again we made sure to focus on concepts: the notion of a probability space, independent and mutually exclusive events, and Venn diagrams. This helped him sort through different types of questions.

We went over all the somewhat-confusing problems from Saturday School work, and then I gave the student an introduction to trigonometry. He had seen the SOHCAHTOA definitions of sine, cosine, and tangent, but I introduced them in the context of the unit circle, and as functions of an ever-increasing angle theta. I gave him a good way to memorize the sine and cosine values that everyone will be expected to know. I'll check in next week to solidify what we covered, but I think we did really well to introduce so much.

The student and I spent our session working on an assignment she has due right after her quiz/test next week so that she could have more time this week to study. We dealt with the Line Editor class assignment in which I helped her through writing the Line Editor method deleteAll, which removes all occurrences (if any) of a given String from the line of text, including any that are formed as a result of the deletion process. We had to review concepts including parameters, variable declaration, and the assignment operator in order to code the method successfully. Once she has reviewed this material we will go over her questions, solidify her understanding of the concepts, and then tackle the CodingBat assignments on strings, loops, and iterations.
