Tutoring review by Ryan in Bridgeport, CT
Today the student and I discussed the use of accents.  Her Spanish class this coming year includes a great deal of written Spanish communication and accents are important.  We talked about the rules for use of accents and difference of meaning with words that feature both no accent and an accent.  I gave her some practice activities.  After this we had a short (8-minute) conversation in Spanish.  The student needs to give presentations in class next year and it is a major goal to increase her speaking abilities.

Tutoring review by Linda in Bridgeport, CT
In our last session, I started the student off with a leisure book that she read independently as I listened to her read at a whisper. I intervened when needed such as when she got stuck at a word and showed her strategies such as skipping the word and reading on for clues or looking at pictures for assistant. Frequently, I would stop and ask her to retell me the story and asked her comprehension questions to see if she understood what she was reading. In preparation for her exam, we read a passage together and I had her write a summary for each paragraph that she read. Together, we worked on answering questions and I had her referring back to the notes she took for help. I reminded her of good reading strategies such as  rereading the sentence whenever she got stuck at a word and making sure to have a visual or an image before moving on to the next sentence.

Today the student and I went over her math problems that she did for homework. We also went over her sentences that she did for homework. I gave her more words to define before our next meeting. She is going to continue writing sentences for all the words. We discussed strategies for the math, synonym, and analogy sections of the test. We also went into detail about the relationships to identify on the analogy part of the test. She created her own examples for each kind of relationship that is found on the analogy part of the test. We will continue working on the verbal section of the test during our next meeting.
