What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe that a teacher or professor or tutor is someone who is there to guide the student to understanding. They are more of a coach who helps the student understand information and does not just hand them answers.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would want to take a few moments to get to know the student and also understand their learning style. This will help me to better assist them.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I will offer students online activities and self-help websites, as well as videos that will help the student become an independent learner.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Frustration can be very de-motivating. I will make sure that students do not get frustrated or overwhelmed and make sure that the tutoring environment is very calm. I will use patience and understanding.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
First, I would try explaining the information in another way. I would find outside sources to help, and would use a variety of learning activities to help with understanding.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Comprehension can be difficult. I would read through the passage with them a couple times, pointing out key things to look for. Then I would ask them specific questions to help guide them toward the correct answer.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Making sure that I build a relationship with a student is important. I want them to be comfortable working with me.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I want to help them have the "lightbulb" turn on and understand the underlying concepts. I always will be smiling and understanding, and patience and happiness is contagious.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would use reinforcement, comprehension questions, and review techniques.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
This is through practice. If it is math, have them do several problems and praise them when they succeed.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
There are several things here to look at. You will want to look at academic deficiencies as well as any emotional things going on.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I look at learning style, and I am sure to adapt my teaching methods to their personal learning style.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
It depends on the student. We can use actually homework questions, online sites, YouTube videos, practice questions or case studies.
