Teaching Philosophy
I agree with Donald Saari's comments about challenging students to think critically about calculus and mathematics. Saari offers students "behind the scenes views" of mathematical discovery and students are motivated because mathematics is not presented without historical anecdotes that enrich a student's understanding. Favorite courses are: Elementary Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, College Algebra, Elementary Statistics, Calculus I and Calculus II.
I want students to experience mathematics in such a way that they are "transformed" by concepts. When teaching elementary statistics, I stress the value of statistical literacy in how the world works. Moreover, I offer behind-the-scenes views and historical context, sparking "deep" learning.
After reading Ken Bain's "What the Best College Teachers Do," I am inspired and have two quotes that solidified my teaching philosophy.
The moments of the class must belong to the studentnot the students, but to the very undivided student. You don't teach a class. You teach a student. The best teaching is often both an intellectual creation and a performing art.

Every student is unique and brings contributions that no one else can make.
In summary, teaching undergraduate mathematics has been my passion and "my calling." Teaching inspires me to be the best that I can be.
