Acquiring knowledge and gaining excellence are my inborn thrust and in the line with my desire; I always take the challenge to unfold my potentialities and ignite all my talents through enlightening touch of education which can be accomplished through qualitative, quantitative and standard form of study in different scientific fields. Broadening my prospect of knowledge is a matter of great pleasure to me and thus doing research to know the unknown from the molecular level is my motivation toward my higher education.
From my childhood I was very competitive and explorative and always taking challenges and brazing them out with success. It has always been a firm belief for me "not to compromise with failure and not to give up anything in a race" and have always followed this advice in my life. I have studied hard and corrected my weakness all the time. It has been a great pleasure for me to seek knowledge of Chemistry and Mathematics from the very beginning of my school life. When I have discovered that science is that part of knowledge where judgment and new justification gives precise ideas and explanation about all the things, I started thinking that it will be my technique of life to discover something which will be innovative and creative. Due to my great interest in science, I got a GPA of 4.44 out of 5.00 in my secondary school certificate (SSC) exam. Then I have got chance to study broadly both in theory and practical courses in Chemistry. Gradually my thrust for acquiring knowledge and learning chemistry has started increasing. I also got a GPA of 4.90 out of 5.00 in the Higher Secondary School (HSC) exam. In my admission test of University of Dhaka, I had to compete with 55,000 students and positioned 601. Then I have chosen chemistry as my major subject in my undergraduate Program among other distinguish subjects at university of Dhaka a renowned University of Bangladesh to fulfill my long cherish desire.
In My B.S courses at Dhaka University have exposed me to a highly competitive and stimulating academic milieu which have honed my skills in basic sciences and put my competence into test. I was proud of being a chemist because Chemistry is considered as an imperial subject in my country. The comprehensive curriculum at University of Dhaka helped me to get a firm grip over the fundamentals of the basic Chemistry subjects like Physical Chemistry-I, Chemical Thermodynamics, Electrochemistry and Physical Properties of matter, Chemical kinetics and photochemistry, Quantum Chemistry, reaction mechanism, Organic Chemistry I and II, Principles of Inorganic Chemistry, Bio-organic Chemistry, Nuclear Chemistry, Inorganic quantitative Analysis, Stereochemistry etc. I have also come to study different significant aspects of chemistry and developed keen interest in the field of Polymer, Biomolecules, Macromolecules and Solid-State Chemistry, Spectroscopy, Surface Activity, Natural Product, Chemical synthesis and Analytical Chemistry.
My undergraduate Project titled "Equilibrium and kinetics study of adsorption of aqueous Methylene Blue by pineapple crown leaves" has been successfully completed under the supervision of Professor Hosne Ara Begum and enabled me to know deeply the vast world of 'Physical Chemistry'. Each day of the final year I was delving through the hundreds of research articles about different types of adsorbents, dyes and their different types, and the activation process how the adsorbent interacts with various metal, dyes etc. The main objective of my project is useful for using natural waste as an economic bio-adsorbent in the removal of Methylene Blue from wastewater. Water pollution by organic chemicals is of great public concern. The textile industries stand out among the industries that produce effluents with high polluting load. Due to low biodegradation of dyes, a conventional biological treatment process is not very effective for removing dye from wastewater. The adsorption process is one of the effective methods for removal of dyes from waste effluent. During the period I have gathered a lot of experience in UV-visible spectrophotometer, FT-IR spectrometer and GC-FID. Being accustomed to different analytical techniques both in organic and inorganic sphere I have experienced both liquid and gas chromatography techniques, column chromatography techniques as well spectroscopic techniques. Besides this, a good number of experiments have been made on kinetics, organic synthesis, Analytical Chemistry, Physical properties as per degree requirement.
Because of continuous interests in science, especially in chemistry, I joined the PhD program in the fall of 2014 at South Dakota State University. During my graduate life, I have characterized naturally derived polymers using a wide range of techniques such as Oxidation, Thermal, Spectroscopic, and Chromatographic techniques. Specifically, the project I involved is a subcritical water dehydrooxygenation of lignin to methylphenols, which are then converted to resins and coatings. The goal of my project is to chemically characterize the residue from the dehydrooxygenation and determine a possible mechanism for the reaction. For example, is the residue simply unreacted lignin, smaller breakdown products, or material which was cleaved and then recondensed? During his project, I gained analytical skills in gas and liquid chromatography (including with pyrolysis), wet chemistry methods, supercritical fluid extraction, nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy, and thermal methods (thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry). I have a strong knowledge of biomass, biomass analysis, and biomass processing.
I am also highly interested in green chemistry, which is one of the reasons I chose to join Dr. Raynie's research group. My passion for green chemistry was fostered by experiences my life experiences. I was selected from a competitive pool to participate in the American Chemical Society Summer School on Green Chemistry and Sustainability held at the Colorado School of Mines. I am academically well-prepared and interact well in collaborative projects. I anticipate that my participation in this teaching organization will lead to the development of a set of relationships which will further for the students, my career, as well as for the organization.
