Varsity Tutors is happy to help all college-bound students increase their understanding of the ACT, a test that may have an influence on your chances of getting into a top degree program, through Washington, DC ACT preparation. If you're planning on attending a college or university, chances are you'll need to take the ACT as part of the entrance requirement. Considered by many to be one of the most challenging and comprehensive assessments, the ACT evaluates you on what you've learned throughout your time as a high school student. For this reason, most schools in the DC area, including institutions like Woodrow Wilson High School and BASIS DC Public Charter School want their students to prepare for test day.
There's a lot to cover when studying for the ACT, so it's important that you use your time efficiently. The exam is broken up into four sections, with each section covering a different subject. Those subjects are Math, English, Reading, and Science, as well as an optional writing component that you can also take. Because there's so much material to cover when preparing for the ACT, many students prefer learning in a structured and collaborative environment like the one provided by a Washington, DC ACT prep course.
What does Washington, DC ACT prep cover?
A comprehensive ACT prep course will help you review all the content you'll encounter on the exam. By studying for the ACT in a structured learning environment, you'll increase the chances of mastering and learning how to apply the core concepts you're evaluated on. A lot of students admit that the ACT is challenging, not only because of the material covered, but because they only have 2 hours and 55 minutes to complete the exam. For this reason, we recommend that students enroll in Washington, DC ACT prep to gain the study habits, organizational skills, and working knowledge needed to succeed. You may find it difficult to prioritize content when studying for the ACT. Not sure where to start? Then let's take a deeper look at the different portions of the test, starting with the Math section.
The Math assessment consists of 60 multiple-choice questions, which you have one hour to answer. These questions cover various levels of algebra, including pre-algebra and intermediate algebra, as well as more difficult subjects like geometry and trigonometry. Here, you'll be expected to draw upon the information you learned from all the math courses as a high school student. Everything from functions and geometric shapes to numerical reasoning and graphing will be covered in this section.
The English section looks at your command over the English language. You'll be given 45 minutes to answer 75 questions. These questions will look at how well you're able to apply punctuation and grammar rules, as well as your ability to make informed decisions based on contextual clues. To ace this section, it's important that you understand the subtle nuances in the English language, especially with regards to style and tone.
The Reading component also assesses your English skills, but in a different way. Here, you're expected to answer 40 questions within a timeframe of 35 minutes. The questions are multiple-choice and are accompanied by several reading passages. You have to extract data from these passages to answer questions, define words and phrases using contextual clues, and demonstrate that you understand the difference between opinions and facts. This section is especially important, as you'll encounter similar exercises throughout your time as a college student.
Finally, there's the Science section. For this portion of the ACT, you're given 35 minutes to answer 40 questions on a number of scientific disciplines. Everything from Earth science to physics, biology, and chemistry will be covered in this section. To do well on this part of the exam, you must be able to use logic and reasoning to solve a series of problems.
If you decide to take the optional Writing section, you'll be required to write a well-structured essay within a 40-minute timeframe. The essay will be based on one question, and you'll be presented with three different perspectives on that opinion. Drawing from one or more of those perspectives, combined with your own thoughts and ideas, you must write a response to the question using the information presented before you. Along with your command of written English, this section also looks at your persuasive writing skills and how well you're able to present an argument.
