Recent Durham Human Resources Tutoring Session Notes
Worked on final review sheet. Started with basic trig functions and worked with both angles and side measurements to set up problems to solve. Worked on simplifying algebraic fractions as well as parabolas. Biggest problems were with order of operations and correct distribution and extraction.
Today the student and I worked together on his differentiation homework combining all of the techniques learned so far in his Calculus class. He showed clear mastery of the differentiation techniques; however, he struggled with simplifying the resulting derivatives afterwards, so I had to guide him through the simplifications. Afterwards, we took a sneak peek at his next lesson, which will cover implicit differentiation.
Administered English and Math sections of practice exam to gauge student strengths in each section and to identify areas of improvement. Discussed problematic questions and themes in the English and Math sections of the practice exam. Made note of topics to cover in future sessions.
The student and I covered the following topics: curve sketching and optimization problems (4.5 and 4.7 in her textbook). We worked through many examples, and we will finish covering optimization in our next session. I assigned her a few problems to do before her next session as well.
The student is very well prepared. We are going to leave grammar behind, unless she has questions, and we are going to focus on listening, oral, and comprehension skills.
The student and I worked on a family tree project for Spanish. His final task was to type up a rough draft about his family, and start looking for pictures to begin his family tree. Also, we worked on a Chemistry project on percent yield.
