What can Houston ACT prep cover?
The ACT consists of four sections including English, Math, Reading, and Science, with an optional Writing section. The exam without the Writing section lasts for 2 hours and 55 minutes. The Writing section has an allotted time of 40 minutes. The exam begins at 8:00 AM and normally ends around 12:35 PM if you take the ACT, or around 1:35 PM if you take the ACT Plus Writing. We will take a closer look at each section to get a better understanding of the layout of the exam.
The English section is scored on a scale from 1-36. It contains 75 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 45 minutes. This section contains passage-based questions that measures reading comprehension abilities commonly encountered in first-year college curricula. The English section covers content in sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, topic development, organization, unity, style, tone of language, and cohesion.
Next, the Math section analyzes mathematical skills in various courses acquired up to the beginning of grade 12. Certain calculators are allowed for this section. Academic topics you are tested on include pre-algebra, trigonometry, elementary and intermediate algebra, and plane geometry primarily. Competence in number systems, shapes, graphing, and functions are vital for this section. The Math section includes 60 multiple-choice questions, lasting for 60 minutes, with a score on a scale from 1-36.
The Reading section has 40 multiple-choice questions with an allotted time of 35 minutes. This section is scored on a scale from 1-36. The Reading section includes questions that measure reading comprehension, knowledge of language skills, and production of language. You may be given various passages to find central ideas, words, meanings, and differentiate between facts and opinions.
Finally, the Science section has 40 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 35 minutes. This section is scored on a scale from 1-36. The Science section measures interpretation, analysis, and problem-solving skills. The content also requires manipulating and analyzing scientific data presented in different formats. The subject areas in this section include biology, chemistry, physics, and others.
The optional Writing section has one question to be completed in 40 minutes. This is scored on a scale from 2-12. This essay question is a prompt that presents an issue and three different perspectives on the issue. You should respond with your own argument while making connections between your viewpoint and at least one of the provided perspectives.
